The Agent Skills format packages instructions with optional scripts and reference materials. Anthropic's October 22 donation announcement highlights portability and community governance. Neither property means every published skill is safe to install in a business environment.
Review more than the description
Inspect executable files, dependencies, network destinations, and instructions that ask for credentials or additional permissions. A benign-sounding skill can still direct an agent to disclose data or run code.
Keep the source and approved version identifiable. If a repository changes after review, the old approval should not silently cover the new contents.
Separate evaluation from production
Try new skills in an environment without production credentials or sensitive records. Define the tools available during evaluation and observe actual behavior, including files created and external requests attempted.
For internal procedures, assign both a business owner and a technical reviewer. The business owner validates the process; the reviewer checks that the implementation does not exceed the approved authority.
Plan for removal
Know which agents depend on a skill, how it is updated, and how to disable it quickly. If a skill produces operational artifacts, preserve enough provenance to identify which version created them.
An open standard can reduce vendor lock-in while increasing the importance of your own package-selection process. The appropriate response is not to avoid reusable skills. It is to adopt them with the same discipline used for other code and configuration that can influence important business systems.
