Is Perplexity Actually Replacing Google for Business Research? We Tested It for 60 Days

Perplexity AI promises to replace search for knowledge workers. After 60 days of rigorous business use, here's our honest assessment of where it wins and where Google still dominates.

Perplexity AI has positioned itself as a direct replacement for Google in knowledge work contexts — a claim that generated both enthusiastic adoption and healthy skepticism. We integrated Perplexity Pro into our workflows as a Google replacement for 60 days across business research, competitive intelligence, technical documentation lookup, and current events monitoring. Here's what we learned.

Where Perplexity genuinely wins

Research synthesis is Perplexity's strongest suit. For questions requiring information from multiple sources — market sizing research, competitive landscape analysis, regulatory status checks — Perplexity's ability to read and synthesize across multiple current sources in a single response is dramatically more efficient than traditional Google search. A market research question that would require opening and reading ten Google results is answered in a single Perplexity query with citations included.

Current events and news summarization are also Perplexity wins. For staying current on a specific topic — AI regulation developments, a particular competitor's activity, industry trends — Perplexity's daily digest feature and natural language monitoring are meaningfully more efficient than Google News.

Technical documentation lookup is the third area where Perplexity consistently outperforms: asking "how do I configure X in Y framework" with specific version context produces direct, accurate, cited answers faster than parsing Stack Overflow threads.

Where Google still dominates

Local search, product search, and anything requiring Google's business directory data remain Google's domain. Perplexity's web coverage is strong for recent, textual content but thin for local business information, product comparisons with live pricing, and visual content.

Complex, multi-session research projects also favor traditional search — the ability to save searches, build research folders, and track a topic across weeks is better served by Google's ecosystem (particularly when combined with Google Alerts and Scholar) than Perplexity's current workflow.

The verification requirement

Perplexity's citations are generally accurate but not infallible. In our 60-day test, we identified three instances where Perplexity cited a source that, on inspection, did not actually support the claim made. This is a lower error rate than we've observed in uncited LLM responses, but it's high enough that for any factual claim that will be used in client-facing work, direct source verification remains necessary.

The verdict

Perplexity replaces Google for roughly 40% of our business search use cases — specifically research synthesis, current events, and technical lookup. It is a genuine productivity multiplier for knowledge workers who do significant research. It does not replace Google for local, product, or visual search, nor for complex multi-session research projects. At $20/month, it earns its cost easily for knowledge-intensive roles.
