Google's Argon announcement and Anthropic's Sonnet 5.5 documentation describe visual and document-related capabilities. For businesses, the relevant question is whether a model can interpret the imperfect material staff actually receive.
Build a realistic document set
Include scanned pages, rotated tables, small labels, multi-column layouts, missing pages, and charts with similar colors. Use material your organization is authorized to process and avoid exposing private customer data during an informal comparison.
Separate reading from reasoning. A model may recognize a number correctly but draw the wrong conclusion from its unit, date range, or denominator.
Require traceable extraction
For important values, record the page, table, or visual region that supports them. Compare extracted figures against a reviewed reference. Treat uncertain or unreadable content as an exception rather than encouraging the model to guess.
For charts, test whether the answer distinguishes estimates from exact values and correlation from an asserted causal explanation.
Validate the downstream action
If extracted information updates a financial record or triggers a decision, enforce validation before the write. Correctly formatted output is not proof that the source was read correctly.
Measure error severity and review burden, not just the proportion of fields populated. Supplier benchmarks can help shortlist models, but a clean demonstration image rarely represents the complete operating environment.
A useful multimodal system should know when the evidence is inadequate and preserve enough source context for a person to resolve the case quickly.
