Microsoft's October 7 summary of September 2026 Copilot Studio updates describes a platform that combines apps, workflows, and agents. It highlights app creation and managed runtime in public preview, hooks for deterministic controls in preview, and generally available Foundry IQ integration.
Choose the right building block
An app gives people a structured interface. A workflow executes an established sequence. An agent interprets a request and chooses a path within its available instructions and tools. Most business processes contain all three kinds of work; making every step agentic can introduce unnecessary uncertainty.
For employee onboarding, a form can capture validated details, a workflow can create approved tasks, and an agent can answer policy questions. Payroll changes and access grants should still follow explicit authorization rules.
Do not flatten release status
Public preview and general availability are not interchangeable. Confirm support terms, regional access, tenant settings, and data requirements for each capability. A production-critical process should not inherit preview risk because several features appeared in one announcement.
Pilot the complete process
Test whether the user can finish the job, not just whether the agent sounds helpful. Check connectors, identity propagation, exception handling, and recovery after partial failure. Include a scenario in which the user is not authorized to retrieve a document or execute an action.
Microsoft's consolidation may reduce the number of separate tools makers need. The implementation still needs a clear process owner and acceptance criteria. The strongest result is a business process with predictable boundaries, not simply a more sophisticated conversational interface.
